Before it even gained official status as a town, Spartanburg, SC was playing a significant role in United States and Southern history. During the Revolutionary War, the Spartan regiment engaged in multiple battles against the British, including the Battles of Cedar Spring and the infamous Battle of Cowpens. Visitors to Spartanburg have the ability to visit these historic battlefields year-round to relive a piece of history. Spartanburg also produced multiple Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and was home to Camp Croft, a major Army installation, during World War II.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, many of Spartanburg’s attractions take advantage of the city’s mild South Carolina climate by offering outdoor entertainment. Visitors may enjoy touring Walnut Grove Plantation or horseback riding and hiking through Croft State Park. The city also boasts multiple outdoor festivals throughout the year, including the Spartanburg Spring Fling in May and weekly concerts in April through August as part of Music on Main and Jazz on the Square.
